Kensi Gounden Gets the Job Done With LSBC

Kensi Gounden
From 1998 until the present day, Kensi Gounden has worked with the Law Society of British Columbia (LSBC), which is a group charged with properly regulating more than 13,000 lawyers in the province and making sure they treat clients right. As the manager of the Department of Practice Standards, Kensi has led teams in the strategic planning and change management processes. He either led or assisted with the development of performance standards designed to lead to better monitoring of performance standards. Through his work, he has played a critical role in altering the Practice Standards Department's approach to regulatory issues. Instead of a reactive approach, they now take a more proactive stance. Kensi also implemented that approach in the Department's overall strategic plan, so now, the Department is better able to identify regulatory concerns and problems before they arise, which makes them more effective.

Kensi Gounden also often leads, or at the very least assists, with the negotiation of complex agreements involving many different parties, including company executives, company directors, government agencies and departments and public interest stakeholders. He also conducts administrative law hearings for regulatory bodies and private sector businesses.

Thus far, it can be said Kensi Gounden's stewardship of the Practice Standards Department has included taking a leadership role on several task forces, requiring him to work directly with a wide variety of stakeholders to develop mandatory professional development standards for lawyers. This is a very controversial an difficult area under the best conditions, but they were able to develop Canada’s first Continuing Professional Development (CPD) program for lawyers, as well as online mandatory courses for sole practitioners and small firm lawyers. The latter won several international awards.
